Dating: Worth Taking the Risks

Take a Risk with Your Dating Life in 2016
“I encourage you to live with a mind that is open to everything and attached to nothing.” -- from Dr. Wayne Dyer in his book, Pulling Your Own Strings.

We all have "the one who got away" in our dating histories. The gal or guy who was perfect for us but we were too scared, hesitant to tell them. Those moments where we wish we had been braver, spoke up and believed in ourselves more.

Oh, we resolve to confess our hearts to the next one only to blanket ourselves in caution once again. Our chance at love is lost due to our fears of rejection.

According to Margie Warrell, author of Brave, "we are innately risk averse and afraid of putting our vulnerability on the line. The status quo, while not particularly fulfilling, can seem like an easier, softer, less scary, option."

Although we can't 100% control when or how we'll find love, one thing's for sure, we won't ever meet The One if we refuse to get out of our comfort zone and take a few risks. This means talking to the cute barista. This means saying "yes" to coffee with a friend of a friend's cousin who is in town. This means approaching "yet another" first date with excitement.

Break free of the status quo. Do something different. Do something brave. Be vulnerable. Take a risk.

"The One" will thank you for it.

Make 2016 Your Best Dating Year -- Call Me!

My Facebook feed on New Year's Day was full of hope that 2016 would be an awesome year. They are going to shed those few pounds, stub out their smoking habit or make reading one book a month a literary habit.

What about your love life? Many people don't post their goals for finding the one, but it ranks up there as one of the most popular new year goals. If you're single and interested in making this year your best one yet, let personalized matchmaking help you reach that goal.

What is Personalized Matchmaking?
Matchmaking takes the personal legwork out of dating by outsourcing “the search” for interesting, like-minded individuals. As your professional matchmaker, it is my job to hand-select matches for you based upon the information given during your initial interview. I also take into consideration the on-going feedback received from you after every date, as dating is a fine tuning process! I'm interested in your desires, goals and what motivates you. Then, I utilize that data combined with my experience and instincts to keep improving your matches.

Who Uses Personalized Matchmakers?
Singles who are short on time, looking to extend their dating circle and looking for a more serious relationship.

SHORT ON TIME
Did you know it takes over TEN HOURS of online dating browsing, texting, chatting before you go on ONE DATE. Even then, there is no guarantee that will be with someone who is interesting and you connect with without Wi-Fi. As I stated before, let me do searching and hand-select a match that you find interesting without the hours of browsing.

FIND LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE
I have a lot of clients who are very active in the community and in the business world who come to me specifically because they don't want to date within those circles. It's too uncomfortable or too many gray areas. I get that. Let me introduce you to people will similar goals, interests and likes who are outside your circle of friends but within my database.

SERIOUS RELATIONSHIPS
Singles who are ready to make a serious commitment reach out to matchmakers. They are looking to go beyond the "just looking for fun" relationships to someone looking to settle down. They are looking for the one. Just like you.

Sound amazing? Well, here's what you do next . . . CONTACT ME!
Contact me at itsjustlunchtoronto.com or 1-416-703-3900 to schedule a discreet, confidential interview. I want to learn about you and determine what you are looking for in a potential partner. I work directly with busy professionals that are looking for "The One." Our clients range from mid-20s to upper 60s. They are of various ethnic and religious backgrounds, education levels and professions.

Everyone Loves a Sense of Humour; But It's Tricky

Sense of Humour Dating Traits Toronto Singles
One of the most popular personality traits people claim to be searching for is a sense of humour. My clients usually tell me that their dream guy or gal is someone who can make them laugh.

We are all attracted, in love and friendship, to the people who lift our moods, give a spring in our step and help shine the light on the brighter side of life. They make us feel good and it feels good to be with them.

Laughter has a way of bringing us together. It forges bonds among family and friends. It is the main ingredient for any gathering.

But everyone's sense of humour is a bit different. Some people use laughter and one-liners to deflect from serious issues. They resist sharing stories of substance, preferring to hear your laughter over your opinion or thoughts.

One of my clients mentioned that she didn't get a good read on her date for she felt he was delivering one-liners. She didn't feel she heard one authentic statement from her date the entire evening.

For some, the use of humour is a way to calm the nerves on a first date. For others, it is a way of coping with life.

The easiest way to tell the difference is whether or not you feel like you are an audience of one at a comedy club, as in the case of my client. If you are unable to have a discussion where he or she isn't trying to tickle your funny bone, then maybe that isn't the right person for you.

Another warning sign about humour is how it is used. There's a difference between seeing something in an unexpected way and making fun of someone or something. The latter can be detrimental to a relationship in the long run.

While laughter is attractive and builds camaraderie, it can also build a wall between two people trying to connect.

How do you feel about humour and dating? Do you have any stories to share? We would love to hear them in the comments section! For more information on dating, visit our website at itsjustlunchtoronto.com

Throw Your Own Singles Super Bowl Bash - Tips and Ideas

The Super Bowl event is one of those occasions singles everywhere can enjoy regardless of how they feel about football or the teams they will be rooting for.  It offers a chance for strangers to come together in camaraderie, shared passions and on the field competition. It is a celebration of amazing feats and a sound board for the occasional disappointment.

Which leads us to ask, where will you be watching the Super Bowl this year? No plans yet? May we suggest that you host your own Super Bowl Bash?

Hosting your own party is a great way to show off your social charms and bring like-minded singles into your home. Cook up your favorite dish, invite everyone you know and ask them to bring their favorite dish or a single friend. Many singles prefer house parties anyway so this is an excellent opportunity to draw in singles who would otherwise be sitting at home alone or feeling out of place at a pub. If you bump into a cutie at the grocery store or coffee shop and discover they don’t have any plans for the big event, invite him or her too!

Playing host can definitely have its perks and work to your advantage, especially if you’re single. Here are a few ways to make it easy on you while scoring big points with your guests.

Potluck / BYOB
Spread the work around so you don’t have to slave in the kitchen or at the grill while your guests are enjoying themselves. Have your guests help cater the event. It is best to keep track of who is bringing what so that you don't end up with eight veggie platters. Boom! Instant party!

Order Out!
Nothing says easy like delivery! Just remember to order the pizzas or takeout early for restaurants get hit fast and hard on game day. Have guests bring drinks, snacks or desserts and settle in for the game!

Running Low? Do a Run!
Don't be afraid to pop out during halftime to restock chips, cheese or sweets. Take a collection if you need to? The idea is that this can be as easy, low key as you want it to be. Don't stress.

Stock Up Early
You know you will need ice, napkins, plates and cups. Stock up early and then you don't have to worry about it during last minute prep. Extra points for purchasing items in team colors!

Share your Super Bowl stories with us in the comments section below!

Ask the Matchmaker: How Do I Find My Dream Guy?

Q: How would I go about meeting someone 50- 60 white professional male?
-- Posted to the It's Just Lunch Toronto Facebook page

A: This is one of the more frequent questions I receive from friends, family and even people who I cross paths with at cocktail parties: how do I meet my ideal mate?

The top three challenges singles face when searching for their match is making the time for dating, knowing where to find like-minded people and keeping an open mind during the process.

1) Making Time for Dating
It's been crazy for you. You've had several business projects find their way to your desk, many with tight deadlines. You spend the majority of your day in meetings, traveling to those locations and stuck in traffic for thirty minutes each way for your commute. Your gym card has a fine layer of dust on it. The holidays are coming and you haven't even thought about making plans.

In short, you are in a committed relationship with your job. A growing number of singles are spending long hours at work behind a computer rather than meeting potential matches and developing long-term relationships.

Dating is work -- but you have to put in the hours to reap the benefits.

Make the time. Like taxis and job opportunities, when one appears, a whole slew of others seem to follow. The hardest part is getting started. Step away from that safety zone, return that call and start dating. Your future self will thank you.

2) Develop Interests to Find Interesting People
Interesting singles are all around you. But chances are you are consumed with busy lives and a few insecurities about approaching strangers you find attractive. The key is to notice your surroundings and the people in them. Strike up conversations with the barista, the guy waiting behind you at the store checkout. Having a genuine interest in getting to know new people will be move valuable than you think. You never know who that person might introduce you to in the future.

To meet new people, try taking a new class or say yes to that party invite from the guy down the hall. Branching out, pursuing our interests is the way to find new people with similar interests. In short, break out of your day to day rut to open the doors to new opportunities.

3) Open Yourself Up to the Potentials
One of the most common mistakes I see people making when dating is that they repeatedly date the same type of person and expect different results. Open yourselves up to connecting with people who have similar core values but different professions, backgrounds and interests. That doesn't mean to let go of your deal breakers. Everyone has preferences -- just consider if maybe they are a bit too limiting.

4) Benefits of It's Just Lunch and IJL Elite
Let the experts at It's Just Lunch Toronto do the work for you. A matchmaking service for busy professionals, the matchmakers at It’s Just Lunch take the time to learn what you’re looking for and help you find it. You never know when that low pressure lunch date is going to turn into someone you’d love to take home for the holidays.

We also have a specialized branch, IJL Elite, where executive matchmakers help busy professionals find their match. We are always looking for qualified matches for our clients. Take a moment to fill out the online form and one of our professional matchmakers will follow up with you for a personal and confidential interview. We will take care of all the arrangements and coordinate the first date.

In the end, the road to romance is determined by your focus, willingness to participate and how open you are to potential matches. You are in the driver seat. Be proactive about your dating.

Open Yourself Up to Intention: How to Find Love When You're Not Looking

Let me tell you a story about a friend of mine who grew tired of the dating scene. Her and three friends were traveling in a pack, visiting bars or attending events that held false promises of her finding her match. It got to the point that she felt like dating was draining her energy and the bonding out of her friendships.

It was at this frustrating point that my friend decided she needed to invest in something other than happy hour Mai Tais at the local singles scene. She wanted to go hiking in California and scuba diving in Belize. She wanted time to read her favorite books or try recipes her mother was fond of sending her every week. She wanted to find someone who was more in line with her lifestyle than syncing up happy hour with their schedule.

So, she laced up her hiking boots. She plugged in her blender. But most of all, she invested in herself. As fate would have it, my friend met her future husband during that diving trip to Belize.

It has a lot to do with your INTENTION. The moment you become open and accessible to meeting new people, miraculously, potential dates begin to materialize all over the place -- often when you least expect it. Even in Belize.

Every time you get out of the house and meet someone new, it sets off a domino effect that generates new opportunities. Open yourself up to intention.

Create a Ripple Effect to Make Waves in Your Dating Life

We all know that dating is a numbers game and the more you get out and into the mix, the likelier it is you will cross paths with Mr. or Mrs. The One. It's also smart to talk to anyone, anywhere, even if that person doesn't seem to be your type.

In short, if you throw a pebble into the dating pool, it can have a significant ripple effect that is sure to benefit your status.

A 30-year-old female friend of mine recently met a 60-year-old woman at an art exhibit. Even though the older woman was twice her age, the two ladies found they had many things in common, including their taste in art. The woman later introduced our friend to her nephew and  . . . the rest is history.

Having a genuine interest in getting to know new people and keeping an open mind while you're networking might end up being more valuable than you think. You never know who that person might introduce you to in the future.

Reconsider that party invite before declining. Stay a few extra minutes at that after-work cocktail mixer. Seek like-minded people who can introduce you to colleagues of a similar quality. Expanding your network will ensure a rich life with opportunities and happy times.

Show How You Feel

It's possible to go a long time in a relationship without saying those three little words. Often, actions speak louder than words and there are many other "little things" that indicate a person's level of affection for one another.

Women tend to respond to the "little things" one does, those tidbits of information that might seem irrelevant to most men but become benchmarks in a woman's relationship. These involve remembering the song that was playing on the radio when you first kissed, her favorite color or flower.

Men respond equally to small gestures. leaving love notes under his pillow or packing  a few protein bars and a vitamin drink in his briefcase before he heads off for a long day at work can be extremely touching to a guy.

You don't have to exceed your credit limit to show your sweetheart that he or she is special to you. In the same respect, "talk is cheap" and you can throw out "I love yous" like plates at a Greek wedding, but in order for the words to really make an impact, they must be backed up with significant action.

It's important to observe the non-verbal clues in a relationship. Determining if someone is right for you lies as much in his or her actions and in what they don't do, as it does in what they say. Telling your girlfriend that you want to spend more time with her and then hitting the golf course on the weekend doesn't measure up.

Pay attention to the special things that touch your honey's heart and make an effort to introduce these into your relationship on a regular basis. It takes effort and mindfulness to create a phenomenal affinity with another person. But in the end, it is worth it.

Finding a Mate tops this Years New Years resolution for Singles

The start of a New Year offers an ideal time for each of us to take a look at our lives, and make a few resolutions to enhance our existence! For many Canadians, losing weight, and cleaning up surroundings top the list. But for the millions of singles, finding their soul mate is usually Number 1.

So if this sounds like you, I would ask you to consider a new strategy to achieve your goal. As Einstein said, the definition of Insanity is Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different outcome. And as a matchmaker, I think this definitely applies to dating.

An ever popular, and yet so unsuccessful strategy is to head out on New Years Eve with a few single friends, imbibe in the spirit of the night, and hope to ‘bump into that perfect mate’ who has eluded you all these years. If life were a fairy tale, then this would be a great strategy! If you are single, you may ever have tried this once or twice. But the probability in this complex world, that your future soul mate will just happen to be at the same bar at 11:59 pm New Years Eve is unfortunately highly unlikely.

So I would recommend a more structured approach to such an important quest.

One option would be to connect your goal of meeting someone, with another popular goal – getting in shape. There can be magic in this combination. So join a health club, or take up Yoga. You might just meet someone who at least shares your goal of a healthier lifestyle. And even if you don’t, you will be energized, feel better about yourself, and frankly, be a more attractive date.

Increasingly, busy singles are looking to dating services to help increase their probability of finding a good match. And this time of year, the numbers support the popularity of this choice. Many online dating sites report traffic increases of 15-20%.

Online dating sites typically provide an online profile of each member that can help you screen to what you perceive as a promising match. This can help you whittle the ‘thousands in your city’ down to ‘hundreds’. Just keep in mind that these profiles are self-authored, and may somewhat overstate the interests, attributes and activities. And with the large numbers now connecting through these sites, you may end up feeling like you have just signed up for a second job!

So for the truly busy, I would recommend they consider talking to a professional matchmaker. The advantage that this offers is that a real person, who is a specialist in matching couples, will get to know you, and work within their networks to find what they believe may be a great match. This can be a major advantage. Asking a dating expert to get to know you, and suggest matches that they believe could be a great fit for you, changes the game. Your personal ‘filters’ and ‘lists’, which may have led you to completely overlook potentially promising matches in your past, become less of a factor. And you may be surprised how much you enjoy being with a match selected just for you by a dating expert.

Another big plus is that most Professional Matchmakers will do all the logistic work for you, checking both your calendars, selecting a venue, and making the arrangements. So all you have to do is show up and have fun! And the better matchmakers will also follow up to get your thoughts on their latest match, to help guide their future selections.

And here is one interesting tidbit that I have observed over my years as a matchmaker. When I meet happily married couples who have been together at least 7 years, I often ask them if their spouse would have been on their initial ‘shopping list.’ And far more often than not, the answer is no. But when they met, they sensed chemistry and attraction.

So if finding a mate is on your 2013 To Do List, get on it today.  But take some advice from both me, and Einstein, and try a different approach.

Remember…Valentines Day is just 6 weeks away!

Is it just lunch or is it more?

As matchmaker, I often come across interesting studies that relate to the intricacies of dating and courtship. A recent study released by researchers at Cornell University really caught my attention…
The Researchers, Kevin Kniffen and Brian Wansink, were interested in the importance of what they refer to as ‘commensality’. Yes, I had to Google that, and it means ‘the practice of eating meals at the same table.’ They asked the question, “Does sharing food involve sharing more than just food?” And there answer was a resounding YES.
To investigate this, participants in their research study were asked to rate how jealous they (Study 1) – or their best friend (Study 2) – would be if their current romantic partner were contacted by an ex-romantic partner and subsequently engaged in an array of food- and drink-based activities. They consistently found – across both men and women – that meals elicit more jealousy than face-to-face interactions that do not involve eating, such as having coffee. These findings suggest that people generally presume that sharing a meal enhances cooperation. In the context of romantic pairs, they found that participants are attuned to relationship risks that extra-pair commensality can present. For romantic partners left out of a meal, they found a common view that lunch, for example, is not“just lunch.” In fact, knowing your partner is having lunch with an ex can trigger sexual tension!
Their tests found the lowest rated activity in terms of eliciting jealousy was email correspondence. A live phone chat was somewhat higher. The next step up was face-to-face interaction, over a coffee. But what was particularly interesting was the elevated jealousy recorded when the face-to-face meeting occurred over lunch, and involved eating a meal together, versus just consuming a beverage.
Now here is a fun part of their research report. They found it interesting that the world’s most successful non-internet dating service was calledIt’s Just Lunch’, and postulated that the implicit behavioural associations that relate to ‘communal preparation and consumption of food may impart an advantage to It’s Just Lunch’…as people intuitively know that there is more to this whole thing than just lunch!
Who knows if it does? But my two cents worth is that that Lunch is a great way to approach a first date. Because it is mid-day, it reduces the stress of ‘what to wear, and what to do after’. Because it typically has a time line of about an hour, it is a comfortable amount of time to get a solid first impression of someone you are meeting for the first time. And because you are in a public place, it gives you the opportunity see how a potential date interacts with others such as waiters, and so on and this always helps you gauge chemistry.
So my advice is to get out from behind your computer, put down your smart phones, and Do Lunch this summer with someone you find interesting. Maybe it will turn out to be more than just lunch!
But if you really like being behind your computer, you can read the full report at:http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0040445

Geekology and Dating

Our gadget-obsessed, high-tech world has embraced the idea of “geek” as chic, whether it’s in television with hit shows like The Big Bang Theory or adding a pair of smart specs to your accessory bin.  But how does this trend translate into the dating world?
We discovered that the majority of people, 73% of men and 64% of women say nerdy qualities in a partner are cool, even normal for this day and age. But still, almost one out of four men and almost one out of three women think they would be turned off by someone who is a hard core geek.
It’s Just Lunch’s take: Intelligence is definitely sexy. Show your geeky side, but don’t let it dominate—unless perhaps you’re with a fellow geek. It’s one thing to flex your brain, but if it leads to awkward behavior then you’re doing it wrong.
